The dog slipped his collar on a walk in downtown Amherst.

AMHERST – Heather Miller was walking Blue, a 5-year-old brindle-colored greyhound for her friend Sally Craig On Dec. 19.

The dog that Craig had adopted six months before from the Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society slipped his collar and bolted. He was last seen in Hadley on Christmas about four miles away at the intersection of Mount Warner Road and River Road near Lake Warner.

Now Miller and Craig and an “army of people from all over the place” have put up fliers, called police departments and vets, driven all around and created a Facebook page to help bring Blue home.

Craig is amazed at the outpouring but said, “I guess there are a lot of people with the retired greyhound (community)” who want to help.

She feels awful that he’s missing, especially in this weather. “He doesn’t have much of a coat. He doesn’t have a collar.” But the dog does have a microchip and has racing tattoo numbers in his ears so can be identified that way.

Craig said people should not chase him because he will run but “if they can entice him with food,” that would work. She thinks after all this time, he could be slowing down. She is asking that people just call her as soon as they see him. “Sightings narrow it down," she said.

She thinks he must have found shelter in a barn somewhere and is asking people to check barns or out buildings for him. Anyone who sees Blue is asked to call Craig at 413-478-1382 anytime.
