Hampshire College President Ralph Hexter announces plans to step down

Hexter is the 5th president of the liberal arts college for the study of film, music, theater and the visual arts.

AMHERST — Hampshire College President Ralph Hexter has announced plans to step down after more than four years on the job.

Spokeswoman Elaine Thomas says Hexter informed the Hampshire College Board of Trustees on Monday that he believes this is the right time in his career to plan a leave the post. The two sides are still discussing the details of the transition.

Hexter is the fifth president of the liberal arts college in Western Massachusetts known for the study of film, music, theater and the visual arts.

Hexter joined Hampshire College from the University of California, Berkeley, where he was professor and dean.

Hampshire College Board of Trustees Chairman Sigmund Roos praised Hexter for concluding a capital campaign, completing funding for a major building project and promoting sustainability efforts.
